An 81-year-old Ohio man, William Brock, has been charged with murder after shooting an Uber driver, Loletha Hall, outside his South Charleston home on March 25. The tragic incident unfolded after Brock received scam phone calls threatening his incarcerated nephew and demanding $12,000 for his release. The same caller, or an accomplice, then hired Hall through the Uber app to pick up a package from Brock's residence. Hall, who was unaware of the scam, approached Brock's home and was met with a gun-wielding Brock demanding to know who she was working for. Despite Hall posing no threat and making no demands, Brock shot her multiple times, leading to her tragic death. Brock, who pleaded not guilty, believed Hall was involved in the scam and was acting in self-defense. The Clark County Sheriff's Office is still searching for the scam callers and has issued a warning to residents, especially older citizens, about such fraudulent schemes. Uber has banned the account of the individual who ordered Hall's ride, and authorities are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the scam. This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by phone scams and the importance of verifying information before taking drastic actions.
