Maui Fire Department to release after-action report on deadly Hawaii wildfires

06:25 17.04.2024

The Maui Fire Department released a report detailing their response to the wildfires that swept through the island last August, including the devastating blaze in Lahaina that claimed the lives of 101 people. The report, produced by the Western Fire Chiefs Association, highlighted the heroic efforts of firefighters who risked their lives to save others, including carrying victims piggyback over downed power lines and sheltering survivors inside their engines. However, despite their valiant efforts, the department was overwhelmed by the unprecedented series of blazes, with limited resources and equipment hindering their response.

The report identified 17 specific challenges faced by the department, such as poorly stocked fire engines and a lack of mutual aid agreements between Hawaii counties. It made 111 recommendations aimed at preventing similar disasters in the future, including the need for additional firefighting equipment and creating a statewide mutual aid program. Fire Chief Brad Ventura acknowledged the need for improvement, stating that while he was proud of the department's response, there is always room for enhancement.

The after-action report also highlighted the difficulties faced by first responders, including a critical loss of water pressure after the winds knocked out electricity for the water pumps. Cellphone and internet service outages made it hard for residents to call for help or receive evacuation information, while the lack of emergency sirens in Lahaina left many unaware of the spreading fire. The report recommended an analysis of the island's cellular system and improvements in communication systems for first responders.

The release of the Maui Fire Department's report comes ahead of the Hawaii Attorney General's expected release of a comprehensive investigation into the events surrounding the wildfires. The reports aim to provide a clearer understanding of what happened during the catastrophic events in Lahaina, which caused over $5.5 billion in estimated damage. The aftermath of the wildfires has seen numerous lawsuits filed by survivors and victims' families, holding entities like Hawaiian Electric and Maui County accountable for the devastation caused by the inferno.
