An Arizona woman who accused former major league pitcher Trevor Bauer of sexual assault has been charged with defrauding the baseball player. Darcy Adanna Esemonu, who previously sued Bauer for $1.6 million, was indicted on one count of fraudulent schemes and artifices and theft by extortion. The indictment, unsealed in Maricopa County Superior Court, alleges that Bauer and another person were victims of a scheme that potentially spanned several years. Bauer, who has denied all sexual assault allegations, released a video statement asserting his innocence and criticizing Esemonu's actions. He claimed that Esemonu demanded millions of dollars from him, including for a pregnancy that he says she later admitted was never real. Bauer also mentioned another accuser, Lindsey Hill, with whom he settled a lawsuit without paying any money. Esemonu faces more than 16 years in prison if convicted on both charges. Bauer, who was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers in January 2023 after serving a suspension for violating the league's domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy, has been attempting to revive his career by pitching in Japan and Mexico.
