911 Outages Impacting 4 States

08:43 18.04.2024

Law enforcement agencies in multiple states, including Nebraska, Nevada, South Dakota, and Texas, experienced temporary outages to their 911 services on Wednesday evening. The South Dakota Department of Public Safety acknowledged the interruption in a statement posted on social media, informing residents that texting to 911 was still operational in most locations and that non-emergency lines could be used to reach local law enforcement. Similar reports came from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, which warned of an outage affecting both 911 and non-emergency calls. However, officials assured that they could see the numbers of those who called from mobile devices and would call them back immediately. In Nebraska, several sheriff's offices, including those in Dundy, Kearney, and Howard counties, also reported 911 services being down before later confirming that services had been restored. The Del Rio Police Department in Texas attributed the outage to a major cellular carrier issue. Despite the challenges, officials stressed that emergency services remained operational and urged residents to use landlines or alternate carriers if they could not reach 911. The Nevada State Police reported that texts to 911 were still coming through even when phone lines were not working, and all attempted calls during the outage were responded to.

The outage was first reported around 10 p.m. local time and lasted for approximately two hours before service was restored in most areas. Law enforcement agencies in the affected states were unsure of the exact cause of the outages but reassured residents that efforts were underway to resolve the issue. The Kilgore Police Department in Texas and the Rapid City Police Department in South Dakota were among the agencies impacted by the 911 interruption. Authorities in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, announced a statewide 911 outage but later confirmed that services had been restored. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department also experienced issues with their non-emergency number, but texting 911 remained an option for residents.

Overall, the 911 service interruptions in multiple states raised concerns about the reliability of emergency services and the need for further investigation into the cause of the outages. Despite the challenges, law enforcement agencies worked diligently to ensure that all calls made during the outage were responded to and that emergency services were fully operational once service was restored.
